The Financial Meltdown: Government And Big Business

Yes, we all know by now that big business has pretty much bought our system of government and that the United States government will take care of big business well before taking care of its own average citizens.

The Atlantic

One thing you learn rather quickly when working at the International Monetary Fund is that no one is ever very happy to see you. Typically, your “clients” come in only after private capital has abandoned them, after regional trading-bloc partners have been unable to throw a strong enough lifeline, after last-ditch attempts to borrow from powerful friends like China or the European Union have fallen through. You’re never at the top of anyone’s dance card.

The author of the article compares other countries who have had similar problems like those that the United States is going through, and shows us what exactly brought the financial crisis’s on in said countries. Bad banking practices was one reason for the economic collapses in Russia and a few others.

In its depth and suddenness, the U.S. economic and financial crisis is shockingly reminiscent of moments we have recently seen in emerging markets (and only in emerging markets): South Korea (1997), Malaysia (1998), Russia and Argentina (time and again). In each of those cases, global investors, afraid that the country or its financial sector wouldn’t be able to pay off mountainous debt, suddenly stopped lending. And in each case, that fear became self-fulfilling, as banks that couldn’t roll over their debt did, in fact, become unable to pay. This is precisely what drove Lehman Brothers into bankruptcy on September 15, causing all sources of funding to the U.S. financial sector to dry up overnight. Just as in emerging-market crises, the weakness in the banking system has quickly rippled out into the rest of the economy, causing a severe economic contraction and hardship for millions of people.

But there’s a deeper and more disturbing similarity: elite business interests—financiers, in the case of the U.S.—played a central role in creating the crisis, making ever-larger gambles, with the implicit backing of the government, until the inevitable collapse. More alarming, they are now using their influence to prevent precisely the sorts of reforms that are needed, and fast, to pull the economy out of its nosedive. The government seems helpless, or unwilling, to act against them.

A very interesting read and I suggest that you check out the remainder of the piece here. We are in  for a world of hurt!

Labor Laws Not Being Enforced

Just in case you do not read the NYTimes, an article from the paper says that the Labor Department’s Wage and Hour Division is not doing its job as it is supposed to do. The agency is not enforcing the minimum wage laws as well as overtime laws and a few others. Like we should really be surprised at this?

A few examples of non-action after complaints were filled by under-cover workers:

In one case, the division failed to investigate a complaint that under-age children in Modesto, Calif., were working during school hours at a meatpacking plant with dangerous machinery, the G.A.O., the nonpartisan auditing arm of Congress, found.

When an undercover agent posing as a dishwasher called four times to complain about not being paid overtime for 19 weeks, the division’s office in Miami failed to return his calls for four months, and when it did, the report said, an official told him it would take 8 to 10 months to begin investigating his case.

The report pointed to a cavalier attitude by many Wage and Hour Division investigators, saying they often dropped cases when employers did not return calls and sometimes told complaining workers that they should file lawsuits, an often expensive and arduous process, especially for low-wage workers.

This is our government at work folks! They won’t take the time to go after employers that are screwing their workers, but they’ll damned sure hand some of those same employers a fist full of “ bailout “ money. I guess that you and I are now “ owned “ by our employers.

A Shot To The Republicans…

   …by way of DailyKos:

The End is Near (and Obama's to blame)

by Steven D
Thu Mar 26, 2009 at 05:52:44 AM PDT

No, this is not another story about the economy, AIG, Goldman Sachs or the stock market's daily ups and downs.  It is a diary about the power of the spoken word.  About what one little speech can accomplish, if the right person in the right place gives that speech.  It is about the end of an error era, one that nearly destroyed our Republic and all that it is supposed to stand for.  And it's also about the people who aren't very happy about that fact.  Follow me below the fold, and I promise all will be explained to your satisfaction.

Update [2009-3-26 9:38:35 by Steven D]: Many, many thanks for putting this diary on the rec list.  I'm honored.  Steven D

Remember when Obama actually broadcast a message of respect to the Iranian people and communicated a desire to re-open diplomatic relations with their country and its government despite a mutual history of conflict and ill will that had built up between our two nations ever since the CIA helped overthrow Iran's legitimate government in the 1950's and install the Shah as a dictator?  Predictably, the neoconservatives proclaimed that Obama's speech was a sign of weakness, appeasement and capitulation to the greatest Islamofascist threat in the world.  That our President was as naive as Neville Chamberlain and his efforts at rapprochement were doomed to failure, and a hard line against Iran must be re-imposed.  That he was Jimmy Carter redux, only this time in blackface.  Why they even claimed Obama's speech showed he wasn't "manly" enough to deal with the hardliners in Iran, and that he would sell out American security if he went through with his diplomatic initiatives, even if that meant turning the US of A into the Muslim States of America.

Well, hold on to your hats, because if one simple speech elicited that sort of reaction, imagine the whirlwind of blithering vitriol and craptacular rhetoric from the neocon deadenders which this news story is likely to set off:

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran said on Thursday it would attend a U.N. conference on the future of Afghanistan which was proposed by Tehran's old foe the United States. [...]

News of Iran's attendance is likely to be welcomed by the new U.S. administration of President Barack Obama, who has offered a "new beginning" of diplomatic engagement on a range of issues with the Islamic Republic.

In an overture toward Tehran, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said earlier this month Tehran would be invited to the conference to discuss Afghanistan, with which Iran shares a long border.[...]

"We believe that a regional solution should be found for the Afghanistan crisis," the semi-official Fars News Agency quoted [Iran's Foreign Minister] Mottaki as saying during a visit to Brazil.

"Iran's goal in the region is to help peace, stability and calm which is necessary for the region's progress," he said. [...]

Iran and the United States have not had diplomatic ties for three decades and are now embroiled in a dispute over Tehran's nuclear program, which the West suspects is aimed at making bombs. Iran says it is for peaceful power purposes.

But the two foes share an interest in ensuring a stable Afghanistan, analysts say.

Poor neocons.  The end truly is nigh.  The end of unilateralism by the US in dealing with the world.  The end of the Bushco foreign policy of "Shoot first and worry about the collateral damage later."  The end of thinking American military might can solve all our problems if we just have a strong enough will to "stay the course" in the greater war against the evil doers in Iraqafganipakisaudijihadistan.

Pity the fools, I say.  It has to be difficult seeing all your dreams of endless wars and crusades going up in the thin smoke of reality.  For the reality is that we cannot win a "War on Terror" and we never could.  And we certainly couldn't do it alone, though God knows Bush tried (and yes, a million people died).  Now the sane people we elected last Fall have to clean up the mess that resulted from eight years of allowing sociopaths complete domination and control of our government.

It's a good sign that Iran is responding to Obama's overtures and agreeing to participate in this conference regarding the security of its neighbor, Afghanistan.  After all, the Iranians want a stable and de-radicalized Afghanistan as much, if not more, than we do.  I don't want to make too much of it, but it is a good first step.  We should ignore the rhetoric coming out of the mouths of Iran's leaders.  It is their actions that matter most.  This action tells me that they are open to engaging the United States diplomatically.  It won't be easy.  There will doubtless be missteps, disagreements, and mistrust along the way.  But it beats the alternative.

To quote that famous conservative icon, defiant war leader, and "defender of western civilization" of whom the right is so fond, Winston Churchill:

To jaw-jaw is always better than to war-war.

He said that (or something similar) on June 26, 1954 at the White House, during the height of the Cold War, when fear of Communist states like the Soviet Union which actually had nuclear weapons (those infamous weapons of mass destruction you've heard about) and large military forces that threatened our national security and the national security of our allies, ran rampant in our country and folks like Joseph McCarthy and General Curtis LeMay were the leaders of the "Let's get them before they get us first" war party.  If those words made sense back then, how much more do they make sense now?

Barack Obama: More Of The Same?

So. it would seem that our President, whom many of us worked our asses off to get elected, has turned into the “Washington Insider “ that he supposedly had contempt for.

I still am not able to keep up with things in the manner to which I am accustomed, but, someone in Qatar has been watching with their eyes wide open.

Watching America

Qatar - Al-Arab - Original Article (Arabic)
On the evening of Obama`s inauguration, I was at a press conference in Johannesburg and was surprised by one of my colleagues who asked “What are your plans for Obama’s inauguration?” I understood the question, to which I replied sarcastically: “We will cover the inauguration from our office in Washington.” But my colleague added, “I mean the coverage of the people’s reaction here and their celebration of this man’s election.”
South Africa and the larger black continent lost control when Barack Obama was elected. On the streets of Johannesburg, t-shirts were sold bearing his image appearing side-by-side with Mandela (in spite of the difference in legacy of struggle and the human dimension). Large screens were set on that day to display the inauguration ceremony, where writers and politicians compared his inaugural speech with Nelson Mandela's speech in 1994 after the fall of the apartheid regime.
So why is the world considering Barck Obama’s election a great victory?
I think this is due to three main factors:
• Power and impact of the picture: the televised image from the United States, where media, public relations, Hollywood and polish played a major role in creating a magic image of a tan-faced man coming from the ground, changing the world and bringing peace. For two years, the television captured an image of him in the best suits with his wife, whom the media portrayed as legendary, on his right-hand side. This appearance connected everybody watching TV, in one way or another, to this magical personage, similar to a Hollywood star.
• The magic of words: on his long road to the White House, Obama appeared as a great speaker and a professional writer using the powerful gloss of certain English language phrases and slogans to fascinate the minds and hearts of the millions who gathered around the world to watch their TVs. The language magically worked in strong and balanced communities were words are influential. With the help of bright slogans and rhetorical phrases, Obama took everything and gave nothing back. With “change,” he was able to shift the balance of power to his side, but the world didn’t ask itself what kind of “change” Obama meant. It’s the language maze.
• The world wants a hero: it seems that mankind today, after being demoralized by economic interests, where the rich are eating the bread of the poor by the power of law and convention, had a desire for any hero who could help to stop the tears, hunger and suffering on earth. This tendency pushed people to create a mythological figure from Obama as a man who would have a positive effect on the entire world.
But a careful overview of the mood of the big leaders that brought Obama to power demonstrates that nothing will change. Obama is a man who was led to the throne by major companies to carry out their interests. Otherwise why would Lockheed Martin, a defense company, contribute over ten million dollars to his campaign? Is it to bring peace, or to start new wars where their weapons will find buyers?
A preliminary overview of Obama’s administration proves that this man is another cold U.S. president, although he said in his inaugural speech that the time had come to get rid “of the false promises that for too long have strangled our politics.” However, he caved in when he made the first non-traditional appointment, that being Charles Freeman. The “New York Times” also determined on March 14th of this year that Obama’s dealing with Guantanamo in legal terms is symbolic only - to set imaginary boundaries between his policies and those of the Bush administration.
But it seems that the Obama phenomenon is deflating. It seems that humanity has become so shallow that we are living in a world made of pictures, in which we are shouting for the legendary hero and then exiting the movie hall when we discover that we are pursuing smoke and seeing dust on water.

More of the same? I would agree with the author that Obama is nothing new. I also would add that he is just a newer, recycled version of those politicians from the past who has been made up to be more 21st century.

Latest On Salmonella

Been a while since I have been able to update this info, sorry.

CDC

As of 9PM EDT, Wednesday, January 22, 2009, 491 persons infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium have been reported from 43 states

Among the persons with confirmed, reported dates available, illnesses began between September 14, 2008 and January 8, 2009. Patients range in age from <1 to 98 years; 48% are female. Among persons with available information, 22% reported being hospitalized. Infection may have contributed to seven deaths.

The investigation is ongoing, and exposures to peanut butter and other peanut butter-containing products are being examined.

To date, 15 clusters of infections in five states have been reported in schools and other institutions, such as long-term care facilities and hospitals. Among 14 clusters for which we have detailed information, King Nut is the only brand of peanut butter used in those facilities.

So this is long from over folks, even though the infections have been slowing down.

AIG Insulting The Taxpayers…

and it ain’t pretty. In case you missed this one, AIG is now suing the federal government to get some $306 million back that the company has paid in taxes! Can you believe this shit?

From the NYT:

While the American International Group comes under fire from Congress over executive bonuses, it is quietly fighting the federal government for the return of $306 million in tax payments, some related to deals that were conducted through offshore tax havens.
A.I.G. sued the government last month in a bid to force it to return the payments, which stemmed in large part from its use of aggressive tax deals, some involving entities controlled by the company's financial products unit in the Cayman Islands, Ireland, the Dutch Antilles and other offshore havens.
A.I.G. is effectively suing its majority owner, the government, which has an 80 percent stake and has poured nearly $200 billion into the insurer in a bid to avert its collapse and avoid troubling the global financial markets. The company is in effect asking for even more money, in the form of tax refunds. The suit also suggests that A.I.G. is spending taxpayer money to pursue its case, something it is legally entitled to do. Its initial claim was denied by the Internal Revenue Service last year.
The lawsuit, filed on Feb. 27 in Federal District Court in Manhattan, details, among other things, certain tax-related dealings of the financial products unit, the once high-flying division that has been singled out for its role in A.I.G.'s financial crisis last fall. Other deals involved A.I.G. offshore entities whose function centers on executive compensation and include C. V. Starr & Company, a closely held concern controlled by Maurice R. Greenberg, A.I.G.'s former chairman, and the Starr International Company, a privately held enterprise incorporated in Panama, and commonly known as SICO.
The lawsuit contends in part that the federal government owes A.I.G. nearly $62 million in foreign tax credits related to eight foreign entities, with names like Lumagrove, Laperouse and Foppingadreef, that were set up or controlled by financial products, often through a unit known as Pinestead Holdings.
United States tax law allows American companies to claim a credit for any taxes paid to a foreign government. But the I.R.S. denied A.I.G.'s refund claims in 2008, saying that it had improperly calculated the credits. The I.R.S. has identified so-called foreign tax-credit generators as an area of abuse that it is increasingly monitoring.
The remainder of A.I.G.'s claim, for $244 million, concerns net operating loss carry-backs, capital loss carry-backs, a general refund claim and claims for refunds of other tax-related payments that A.I.G. says it made to the I.R.S. but are now owed back. The claim also covers $119 million in penalties and interest that A.I.G. says it is due back from the government.
In part, A.I.G. says it overpaid its federal income taxes after a 2004 accounting scandal that caused it to restate its financial records. A.I.G. says in part that it is entitled to a refund of $33 million that SICO paid in 1997 as compensation to employees, which it now says should be characterized as a deductible expense.
A.I.G.'s lawyers in the case, at Sutherland Asbill & Brennan, referred calls to the company. Asked about the lawsuit, Mark Herr, an A.I.G. spokesman, said Thursday that "A.I.G. is taking this action to ensure that it is not required to pay more than its fair share of taxes."

Only can crap like this happen in the United States! I say lynch the bastards and save the taxpayers a few dollars.

Does Geithner Know What He’s Doing?

A few people seem to think that maybe he does and that maybe his plan is already working, to some extent.

DKos

Geithner's plans may be already working

by rweba
Sun Mar 22, 2009

In the last few days I have seen a lot of negative reaction to the President's economic policies. Some people are asserting almost as a FACT that these policies will not work. Well I think it is wrong to present OPINIONS as FACTS, because the reality is no one knows for sure what plan is going to work. Geithner and Summers and Romer are all experienced economists and smart people, they put together a plan that is politically feasible and that they think is the best option right now. Obviously not everyone agrees, but I have not seen any evidence that the alternatives are guaranteed to work (or politically feasible).

I think there are a few different reasons for the dissatisfaction:

(1) Everyone is on edge because of the economy so there is a certain base line pessimism.

(2) Some people don't seem to have confidence in Summers or Geithner. I believe this is unjustified. Geithner's first really major initiative is only going to be unveilled next week. The results won't be seen for a while (probably six months or so). So this is like losing faith in a quarter back before he even plays his first game. Summers hasn't even been in the news. No scandals, no news, yet some people seem absolutely convinced that he is a failure and must go. Huh?

(3) It sounds like there are a lot of people who are economic radicals/economic populists who want Obama to announce some kind of whole sale over haul of the entire economic system, especially if such an overhaul targets the wealthy/CEOs. Problem: I don't think there is any clear picture of exactly what such an overhaul would involve. It is even less clear picture of how such a program would work politically.

An additional problem with the "doom and gloom" perspective is that the state of the economy is to a large degree a self fulfilling prophecy. If everyone believes that we are doomed, and acts as if we're doomed - then yes indeed we'll be doomed. But if people are optimistic about their future, they'll go out and make plans, banks will lend credit to people, stores will have good sales and things will get better for everyone. So the problem with spreading a "sky is falling" meme is that we may be literally shooting our economy in the face. And that could hurt real families and make people lose their jobs.

With that said, here is some recent good news on the economy that indicates the economy may be improving.

(1)  A surprising 22% surge in February housing starts to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 583,000 units.

(2) A back-to-back jump in retail sales ex autos, in both January and February.

(3) A return to profitability at several major banks, including Citigroup, Bank of America and JPMorgan.

(4) A doubling in the obscure but important Baltic Dry Index, a key indicator of global trade flows.

(5) An upwardly sloping yield curve, which Fed research suggests all but ensures a rebound by year-end. (link)

(6) A Housing Affordability Index that has hit an all-time high.

(7) A two-month improvement in wholesale used-car prices, measured by the Manheim Index. (link)

(8) A rise in Monster’s Employment Index in February, suggesting a turn in the job market may be around the corner.

(9) A sharp increase in the money supply, as measured by M2 and M1. Weekly M2 growth has averaged 10.1% year-over-year since the start of 2009, while M1 has grown at a 14.6% rate. link

(10) A two-month rally in the Index of Leading Indicators.

(11) Airline traffic is better than expected.(link)

(12) Consumer confidence is ticking up. (link)

SOURCES: source1source2source3

MORE: blog1 blog2

And you could probably find a lot more stuff out there.

My point is, it seems there are SOME reasons to be optimistic. I am not saying a recovery has definitely started, but I wouldn't be surprised if unemployment started dropping by the fourth quarter (of course it might take longer). And not to say the doom and gloom perspective is COMPLETELY wrong, but it's also good to have another perspective. The truth probably lies somewhere in the middle.

And I do think to a certain extent people are responding to Obama's announced policies. They know that there is a 870 billion stimulus bill that was passed with record speed. They know that they are getting a tax cut starting April 1. They know that they are getting help on their mortgages. And they know that the government (and the entire G-20) have got the financial systems back and are not going to allow a financial sector meltdown. Basically they see that they are some smart people who are on the ball and more than prepared to act boldy to stave off disaster. And this is what gives people CONFIDENCE that everything is going to be all right in the end. And this is the sense in which I mean Geithner's plans may be already working.

Latest Polling Reports

Not that we do not know what you and are have been thinking as of late about  the financial bailout and those lovely bonuses that we have been paying to the top executives of AIG and most of those other companies who helped create this mess that America now finds itself in. Of course, we can also thank quite a few politicians from both sides of the aisle who helped to make over-site non-existent when it came to keeping both brokers and banks in line when it came to them handling our money.

 Rasmussen

The mainstream, or populist, view sees big government and big business as political allies rather than political opponents.

Preliminary results indicate that 55% of Americans can be classified on the populist or Mainstream side of the divide. Only seven percent (7%) side with the Political Class. When leaners are included, 75% lean in the Mainstream direction and 14% lean the other way.

Thirty-seven percent (37%) of those on the populist side of the debate are Republicans, 36% are Democrats, and 27% are not affiliated with either major party.

Twenty-two percent (22%) of government employees are aligned with the Political Class along with just four percent (4%) of private sector workers.

The biggest surprise so far is that a plurality of the Political Class believes the economy is getting better while 66% of those in the Mainstream say it’s getting worse.

The Political Class think that the economy is getting better? Just what fucking planet do those assholes life on, because it surely is not planet earth! It is no fucking wonder that we cannot get our government to get anything done for you and I since they think that life is just fine and dandy! Throw the fucking bums out while we still have a minor chance of saving our asses!

Sorry for the foul language people, but I’ve been off for some time as you know, and I’m very, very hostile right about now. I still will not be on on a regular basis for at least 2 more weeks, so please bear with me. I’ve got a shit-load of print to throw at you when I do get back to normal.

Employee Free Choice Act: Maine's Republican's Get It

With the EFCA finally starting to come to light in our government offices, it's so nice to see a few Republican's coming out in favor of this bill/law.
Two of those GOPers are from the state of Maine. They would be James J. Campbell Sr. and Penni Theriault. James Campbell serves on the Health and Human Services committee, while Penni Theriault is owner of Lots of Tots Child Care, and both of these persons favor the Employee Free Choice Act.

We write as a state legislator and a small business owner who share Mainers' deep concerns about the state of our economy.
Historically, no institution has been as effective at improving the quality of life for working families as membership in a union.

Union members earn better wages, have better health-care coverage and can count on a more secure retirement than non-union workers.

As current and former union members ourselves, we know that unions work.

Who brought us the weekend? Unions. Who rose with unions? The middle class. It just makes sense. Tens of millions of workers would join a union if they could. The problem is that if they try, and their employer resists, workers have only about a 20 percent chance of success.

This is because the current system for forming a union is unfairly tilted in the employer's favor.

That's just wrong. It's un-American and one more example of greed and power run amok.

Not all of the business owners in the United States are morally fucked up when it comes to their employees.
That is why we believe it is essential for Congress to pass the Employee Free Choice Act, which will help Maine's economy get back on its feet by removing barriers to union membership and allowing workers, not just CEOs, to share in the economic success they help create on the job.

The bill would enable workers to form a union when a majority of their co-workers sign cards indicating they want one. This puts the choice of how to form a union in the hands of workers, not corporations.

Just as importantly, the act ensures that workers can freely choose to form a union without intimidation or harassment from their employers.

The final word?
We are also both Republicans and some in our party oppose this bill. However, we do not view this issue through a partisan lens.

We believe enabling more workers to form unions is about justice and fairness – bedrock principles that have guided our nation since its birth.

For too long, big corporations have shunned these ideals and enriched themselves at the expense of America's working families. Today, the average CEO makes 344 times more than the average worker. So it is not surprising that CEOs and their Washington lobbyists oppose employee free choice.

On another note, my blogging software is still not working on my new system, as you can tell. Hopefully this will be corrected soon. Just in case the link for this doesn't show as it is supposed to: pressherald.mainetoday.com and you'll find the article.

Cigarettes And Taxes

So what's up with the rapid increase in cigarette taxes as of late?
I'm not sure about where you live, but here in Kentucky, smokes are going through the roof! I went into Murray today to buy some smokes. One discount smoke shop had my Marlboro lights priced at $38.88 per carton! Just a few weeks ago they were $28 and some change! There was a sign on the entrance way saying that on April 1,2009 there would be an increase per carton of 10 bucks. What the fuck? I did not buy from this place, needless to say.
I went to a different store at the local Wal-Mart. You know, the gas station at the Wal-Mart entrance. Price? $28 bucks. Sign at the register saying to buy now before the price goes up on Monday, by $7.50 per carton. The sign originally said that this was a Phillip Morris price hick, but that was crossed out and now says all brands going up.
Kentucky was looking at a $6 per carton price hike because of a state tax increase on the product. So why are we now looking at an almost up to $20 increase in the price? Smokers are getting fucked by not only the state, but the stores also!

Latest CNN Poll: Healthcare

Republicans have always been one to says that government shouldn't be involved with our nation's healthcare, but, the people of this country say otherwise.
According to CNN, 72% of those questioned:
Seventy-two percent of those questioned in recent CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey say they favor increasing the federal government's influence over the country's health care system in an attempt to lower costs and provide health care coverage to more Americans, with 27 percent opposing such a move. Other recent polls show six in 10 think the government should provide health insurance or take responsibility for providing health care to all Americans.
Sorry that I cannot provide a link to the poll, but since I am now having to go through blogger instead of my own software to post, I haven't figured out how to block-quote or link to the story. You can find the poll results at CNN.com.

The Freezing Rain Disaster

By now, most of you know about the power outages in Kentucky. Remarkably, there are still people without power!
The freezing rain and snow knocked out our power for 12 days. In the meantime, while running gas powered generators,my power supply and motherboard were fried, my 50 inch screen tv was also fried, as was my satellite internet modem, which came from Wildblue. I must say that Wildblue's customer service really sucks ass! I'll have more on that shit later on. Did I mention that we also lost both cell and landline phone service?
Right now I'm using my new laptop briefly only because I still have a shitload of security enhancenemts to make. I'll be back in a few d ays with the Wildblue-Hugesnet saga.

Life Without Power

This will be short and sweet. I'm recovering from the power outages and surges back in Jabuary, which blew my computer abd modems up.
Stay tuned for later posting just in case you happen to be a Wildblue customer because you are about to get fucked by them being bought out by Hugesnet. Direct TV customer? No local channels? I will tell you why later on after me shit is\running correctly. Don't listen to direct TV's responses, they are full of shit.
I'll be back.

Peanut Corporation of America Knowingly Sold Salmonella Tainted Peanut Butter...

and so the CEO and the rest of the higher ups should all be prosecuted as terrorist because this outbreak is basically an act of terrorism. They should also be charged each with 8 counts of murder for the victims who have died from the Salmonella infection. This company should never see daylight again.

Oregon Live

Federal officials said today that the company at the heart of the salmonella outbreak sold peanut butter or peanut paste even after tests showed it was tainted with salmonella.

The Food and Drug Administration found 12 instances in 2007 and 2008 when the Peanut Corporation of America actually identified salmonella in its own product but then put that on the market, sometimes after it was retested by a different lab that found no bacteria, said Michael Rogers, director of field investigations at the FDA.

Scientists have found four different strains of salmonella since starting this investigation: two at the company's Blakely, Ga., plant and two in King Nut peanut butter.

Only one strain, salmonella typhimurium, which was found in Austin Toasty Crackers, has made people sick with peanut butter in Oregon.

The feds say that even more food items will be recalled due to this mess and also pointed out that contaminated items will not necessarily have the Peanut Corporation's name on the label.

As of today, Tuesday Jan 27, almost 200 products have been recalled. this kind of sucks a bit because many of the products are some of my favorites, and I'm starting to lose a little weight from lack of munchies. What's one to do?

Salmonella Found At Georgia Peanut Plant

U.S. Food and Drug Administration has found Salmonella  contamination at a peanut plant in Georgia, as was expected.

               News Daily

"We expect the lots of recalled products to continue to expand," Dr. Robert Tauxe of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told reporters in a conference call.

The Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) facility in Blakely, Georgia isn't producing any more products and hasn't been for some time now. the company has recalled all peanut butter and peanut paste produced at the plant since July 1, 2008.

Somebody is in some pretty deep shit over this, to be sure.

Wal-Mart Union Propaganda

First off, I'm out of power thanks to this shitty weather and I'm running on a little generator now and then. My posts will be very few until power is restored. Those of you in Kentucky and the surrounding states, be careful in this crap an watch out for yourselves and your neighbors.

Here's a story of a meeting which took place back in June of 2008 between Wal-Mart's higher level employees and some of their supervisors from various store locations in the district.

The meeting was about Wal-Mart and the "Employee Free Choice Act", which the company is dead against because the act would give their " associates " the right to vote either for or against union representation. Wal-Mart is scared to death of having this law passed, as are many other companies, because they know that in most cases the workers would vote to unionize.

It was a beautiful, warm day in June. Clear blue sky, fresh air. I pulled my car into the parking lot of the hotel. Funny that we always have these meetings at hotels. Something seems sleazy about having company meetings where hookers do business. But we wouldn't want the regular associates listening in, would we?

I rush in and follow the signs to the meeting room. I am relieved, I am not late. Not that I was giddy with anticipation or anything. I just hate walking into meetings that have already started. I see the company has provided doughnuts and coffee, but I don't grab anything. I was on a 3rd shift schedule, so I had been up already, and had had a chance to grab some breakfast. I look around and spot one of my coworkers. Kevin* had been working all night, all the way up to the meeting. I was fortunate, in that I had the night off and could sleep in before the meeting. I would have hated working the night before one of these meetings. They can be so long and monotonous.

While most of the associates in attendance had no idea what the meeting was about, I had a pretty good idea. A few months ago, I was checking on the company intranet to see if I had any "learning modules" to complete. I spotted a module that immediately made the hair on the back of my neck stand up-- "The Employee Free Choice Act". Uh oh, I thought. I clicked on it, and saw that it was not a regular module, but rather a page where you had to confirm you attended a meeting. I told some of my close coworker friends what was up, that we would probably have to attend one of the company's anti-union spiels. We were not looking forward to it, let me tell you. Most of us DESPISED the company, and everything it stood for.

So now, we are at last at the promised meeting. I see that Bill* and Charlie* are going to be leading the meeting/propaganda. Charlie is the local market's HR guy. He handles personnel issues concerning the local area, encompassing 9 stores (the market). Bill is also there. Bill is the actual market manager (IE, everyone's boss, including store managers). Bill is the kind of guy who loves to drop by his stores incognito, walk around for a while, and then find the managers and tell them how shitty they do their jobs. NOT everyone's favorite guy. Now, I like Charlie. He is a good guy, who actually cares about the associates. Whenever one of the associates has a problem with a manager, Charlie swoops in to let the manager know he better treat us right. I consider him to be an ally-- well, as much an ally as any Wal-Mart shill can be. Bill, is an enemy. Whenever he is in a room, you can be sure that bad things will follow.

We start off the with the excruciatingly long introductions. Everyone has to introduce themselves, the store they work at, and the department they supervise. After that, we finally get to the business at hand. Charlie gets right to the point. "How many of you have heard of the Employee Free Choice Act?" If my memory serves me right, no hands went up. I of course, knew what it was. But I didn't want to make it seem like I knew too much. No sense in being the class know-it-all when it might cost me my job down the road. He explains what the act does, changing the way union organizing drives are conducted. This is where Charlie and the truth part ways. From here on out, it's all lies.

The way Wal-Mart likes to scare associates away from organizing is to attack the union itself. In their brainwashing video, they show organizers as slick, professional bullshitters. Sort of like used car salesmen or ambulance-chasing lawyers. You can visualize the stereotype. They then show actors (I wonder if they are SAG actors?) posing as associates in hypothetical situations. In situation A, we are a happy, non-union store. In situation B, the evil union has taken the store over. The first hypothetical situation is about a spill in grocery. One associate asks another to guard a spill while he cleans it up. Ok, a normal everyday occurrence. Then we see what happens when THE EVIL EVIL UNION has taken control. The associate now says "We can't clean this spill, the maintenance workers are under a union contract. Only they are allowed to do this work. Further, for attempting to do this work in violation of the contract, you can be fined up to $20000". Uhhhh, WHAT!?!? I look around the room, to see if the room is actually buying this malarkey. Then in the next situation, the store manager and a supervisor are deciding on who would be a good associate to promote to department manager. No one has ever consulted ME on promotions, but whatever. Then we see what would happen if THE SATANIC BABY EATING UNION were in the store. Now the slimey shop steward is in the meeting, and he vetoes the store manager's suggestion for a promotion. Mr. shop steward then goes to tell the most senior member in the department (who coincidentally is also the most unpopular) that he has the job. Um, yeah sure. I bet if real unions had micromanaging power like that, GM, Ford, and Chrysler would not be up shit creek right now.

After the non-sense is over, Charlie goes into the politics of EFCA. This peaks my curiosity, as Wal-Mart has never discussed politics with the associates in an official capacity, as far as I know. He talks about the gains the Democrats made in the 2006 elections, and how they already tried to get EFCA passed (to help their union friends-- slimey!). The GOP filibustered, and Bush threatened a veto, so EFCA was dead for the moment. But there was a presidential election coming. "Now, I am not here to tell you how to vote. But if the election were to go the wrong way, we may end up having EFCA as the law of the land. Remember that when its time to vote." We all look around at each other. "Is he telling us how to vote?" Kevin asks, with a tint of anger in his voice. I see others whispering to one another. This was clearly controversial with the room. And I can't imagine what the African-Americans in the room must have been thinking, but none of them really spoke up in response. After that, the associates got more vocal. "Why don't you just give us better benefits?" "This is a rich company, why can't you pay the associates more?". Charlie had his pre-recorded talking points ready. Like how we must remain competitive, and other non-sense from the company that pulls in $400 billion in sales globally.

An eternity later (it was actually probably 2 hours), the meeting ends. We all shuffle back to our cars, so we can clock out and get the hell out of there. Some associates are still talking amongst themselves about what just transpired. But what was lingering in my brain was something Charlie said. Something that made my stomach sick. "To combat the union, we are having meetings with every level of the stores. We already had meetings with the salaried managers. We are currently conducting meetings with you supervisors. And soon, we will start having meetings with the hourly associates." I thought about all those hourly associates. People who have spent decades building this company. People who will now be subject to Wal-Mart's bünd meetings. People who have no skills, and so much to lose if they were to be fired. My friends. I felt powerless in that meeting. I wanted to stand up and scream "You are all damned liars and you know it!". But I kept silent. What good would it have done. Now, all over the country, thousands will know the cruelty of Wal-Mart intimidation and union-busting.

That is why it is so important that Congress and President Obama pass the Employee Free Choice Act. No one should have to live their lives feeling defeated and powerless. No one should have to hold their head low just to feed their families. This is not just about fair pay and health insurance. Its about dignity. Its about respect. Its about being able to go to work, without having to be afraid anymore.

Solidarity.

Names with asterisks were changed to protect people's anonymity (especially mine). I know longer work for Wal-Mart. I have since moved on (thank God) and can now feel safe telling my story. Thank you for reading.

Salmonella Outbreak: January 26,2009

                   CDC

As of 9PM EDT, Sunday, January 25, 2009, 501 persons infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium have been reported from 43 states.

Infection may have contributed to eight deaths.

Although we cannot yet say the outbreak is over, the numbers of new cases have declined over the last two weeks.  The outbreak appears to have reached its peak in December and is now in decline.

Salmonella Typhimurium was isolated in Canada from Austin brand peanut butter crackers purchased in the United States. Officials in Canada have identified the Salmonella found in these peanut butter crackers as the outbreak strain.

Salmonella Typhimurium was isolated from Austin brand peanut butter crackers in Canada. Further tests are pending to determine if the Salmonella Typhimurium in these crackers are the outbreak strain.

More than 180 peanut butter-containing products produced by a variety of companies may have been made with the ingredients recalled by PCA.  The list of currently recalled products can be found on the FDA website*.

Karl Rove Subpoenaed By House Judiciary Committee...

and that ain't no joke! The architect of the " permanent Republican majority ' really has no choice of ignoring this subpoena and of not appearing before the committee, headed by Chairman John Conyers. Karl Rove no longer has former president Bush/Cheney to cover for his ass with their " executive privilege " claims, nor does Rove have the  " absolute immunity " cover either. That position was tossed out by U.S. District Judge John Bates.

Huffington Post

On Monday, House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-MI) issued a subpoena to Karl Rove, requiring him to testify regarding his role in the Bush Administration's politicization of the Department of Justice, including the US Attorney firings and the prosecution of former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman. The subpoena calls for Rove to appear at deposition on Monday, February 2, 2009.

snip

"I have said many times that I will carry this investigation forward to its conclusion, whether in Congress or in court, and today's action is an important step along the way," said Rep. Conyers. Noting that the change in administration may impact the legal arguments available to Mr. Rove in this long-running dispute, Mr. Conyers added, "Change has come to Washington, and I hope Karl Rove is ready for it. After two years of stonewalling, it's time for him to talk."

This is going to get pretty interesting to those of us who keep track of this sort of activity. No doubt, that by now Rove has called every major law firm in the world, hoping to avoid this committee, but that ain't gonna happen. At least, I hope not.

John McCain: Still Stuck On Conservative Talking Points...

so I would guess that Mr. McCain didn't get the memo from the voters back on November 4th,2008 when he got his ass kicked in an election. Oh, that would have been the election for president which he lost.

Mr McCain was on Fox News Sunday being questioned by the ever Republican leaning Chris Wallace, so, as you can imagine, it was interesting.

First we start with proof that McCain really is out of touch with Americans.

From a video clip which Wallace puts up for McCain to watch, we have McCain saying:

MCCAIN: The message that the American people are sending us now is they want us to work together and get to work.

So after the clip Wallace has a question for old John.

WALLACE: Given that belief, what do you see as your role towards President Obama?

MCCAIN: I view it as the loyal opposition -- help and work together where I can, and stand up for the principles and the party and the philosophy that I campaigned on and have stood for for many years.

I have a problem with this answer because McCain says nothing about standing up for the American people in this country. It's all about the party and their principles, few that there are.

Let's get to the economy, shall we?

WALLACE: Let’s talk about the economy. We’ll get to national security in a moment.

The president is pushing an economic stimulus package of $825 billion that raises some of the issues that were at the heart of your campaign against Barack Obama -- $275 billion in tax breaks, including money for people who don’t pay income taxes; $550 billion in spending, including $200 million to re-sod the National Mall, $360 million to fight sexually transmitted disease.

As that package now stands, can John McCain vote for it?

MCCAIN: No. We need to make tax cuts permanent, and we need to make a commitment that there’ll be no new taxes. We need to cut payroll taxes. We need to cut business taxes.

Again with those permanent tax cuts! Give it a fucking break, John-boy, will you? Your party has sucked billions out of the U.S. Treasury with those tax cuts to big business. Money which any real government could have used for real issues. How do you keep the government running without taxes John. Oh, that's right. Privatize it, right?

We need to have a commitment that after a couple of quarters of GDP growth that we will embark on a path as we’ll say -- called Gramm- Rudman -- to reduce spending to get our budget in balance.

We’re going to lay an additional 2 trillion, basically, dollars of debt on future generations of Americans. Is there going to be a point where foreign countries such as the Chinese stop buying our debt?

WALLACE: As it stands now, though, you’d vote against it.

MCCAIN: Well, look. I mean, I am opposed to most of the provisions in the bill. As it stands now, I would not support it.

WALLACE: Would you filibuster it?

MCCAIN: Well, let’s -- I mean, I want us all to sit down and negotiate. The Republicans have not been brought in to the degree that we should be into these negotiations and discussions.

So far, as far as I can tell, no Republican proposal has been incorporated. Maybe there has been. I just may have missed it. But clearly, we need to have serious negotiations.

We already know what the Republican ideas are John. The same as they have always been. More tax cuts and less regulation. the conservative cry throughout the ages. Give us a fucking break.

When asked about the torture issue and Eric Holder's answers on the possibility of prosecutions to those who may have been involved in this mess, McCain did have the same answer all Republicans, and many Democrats have had.

WALLACE: The president’s choice for attorney general, Eric Holder, said the other day at his congressional hearing that waterboarding is torture, and he left open the possibility that lawyers or CIA officers who participated in some of these activities could be liable to criminal prosecution.

How do you feel about that, the idea of the possibility of investigations and even criminal prosecution of people who were doing what they were told to do during the Bush years?

MCCAIN: I think it’s time to move forward. I believe that waterboarding is in violation of the Geneva Conventions, and I’ve said it for years. But it’s time to move forward.     ( my emphasis )

Let's move forward and forget about the illegal activities of the Bush administration so that the next group can screw us even more.

Salmonella Outbreak: Latest Recall Updates

but first, thanks to  Jill Richardson for doing a lot of the legwork on this Salmonella outbreak. She is from whom I get much of the list updates.

                                  La Vida Locavore

Meanwhile, Kellogg Co. issued a voluntary recall of two varieties of ShopRite brand peanut butter sandwich crackers because they contain peanut paste produced by PCA and had the potential to be contaminated. The two recalled sandwich crackers are: ShopRite Peanut Butter on Toasty Crackers, all sizes; and ShopRite Peanut Butter and Cheese Cracker Snacks, all sizes.

The two products are manufactured by Kellogg for ShopRite, which has stores in Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

Whole Foods Market announced a similar recall of its Whole Foods Carob Energee Nuggets distributed to stores in California, Oregon, Washington, and Nevada

Jewel-Osco, a division of Supervalu Inc. and leading Chicago supermarket and drugstore chain, recalled its Happy Tails multi-flavored dog biscuits. Like humans, salmonella in pets can cause diarrhea, vomiting, fever and abdominal pain. It can also be transferred to other animals or humans.

Note: This is NOT A COMPLETE LIST of all recalled foods. This is only the newest foods recalled.

(If you notice - there are a number of brands with identically named products being recalled. A company called Nash Finch makes desserts that are sold under several brand names - even though they are the same exact foods! Any list that starts with "Peanut Butter Grand Brownies" is by Nash Finch, regardless of the brand.)

See the FDA Site for the complete list. As is usual in America, at least 1 lawsuit has been filed in this case. I'm sure that many more will follow. Maybe this is where the next round of government bailouts for business will be heading.

A Bush History Lesson...

since the conservatives and some Democrats keep pushing for even more tax cuts to business. This is also a look at the Bush performance, by the numbers.

Would that the rest of us could forget so quickly. While we are now looking forward to changes with the Obama administration, we're currently living with the world W wrought. For the last eight years, conservatives weren't just digging a hole, they pulled out a squadron of excavators that have put craters all over the national map.

A lot of the numbers are familiar, but with the departure of the economic mangler in chief, it's worth a quick review just to get a look at the scope of the task ahead.

That's 3% in just the reported unemployment rate, which represents a 71% growth in unemployment. It's no surprise that this number is up during Bush's term. Here's a name that's likely to be repeated several times before we're through: Herbert Hoover. As in

Bush has presided over the worst annual job creation record of any president since Hoover.

The rising unemployment doesn't begin to capture the misery generated on the jobs front. Heading into November, Bush was barely in positive territory for job creation over his eight years, and with December's disastrous numbers, he may have been the first since Hoover to go negative. And then there are the folks who have simply given up on getting a job over the last eight years, those who have settled for being chronically employed, and those trapped in part time positions with limited income and benefits.  All of which leads us to the next number.

If you look up the median income, a first glance makes it appear that families are making about $7K a year more now than when Bush came into office. That's until you figure in inflation. With that taken into account, American families actually lost ground. Of course, that's the median income across the board. For CEOs, income increased 223% in 2007 alone. But hey, all those massive CEO salaries, and the $120 billion in bonuses the top five Wall Street firms handed out in five years were surely worth it. Paying for the best, trickle down, etc. etc.

That's the kind of solid conservative thinking that got us where we are today.

Remember when Bush decided to use the "political capital" of his rousing 2004 "mandate" to push for moving Social Security funds into the market? As all of us watch our 401ks sink into the west, along with hopes for a comfortable retirement, we can be cheered at least to the degree that the Republicans didn't get their hands on the Social Security funds. Oh, and here's that phrase again: not since Herbert Hoover has the market suffered so badly under an administration. Bush's bad showing once again demonstrates that Republicans are bad for the stock market. The GOP notion of taking away all the rules and letting the market run wild has produced some good years, and also the worst years in market history.

As of Friday, a $10,000 investment in the S.& P. stock market index* would have grown to $11,733 if invested under Republican presidents only, although that would be $51,211 if we exclude Herbert Hoover’s presidency during the Great Depression. Invested under Democratic presidents only, $10,000 would have grown to $300,671 at a compound rate of 8.9 percent over nearly 40 years.

So maybe we could have people invest some of their Social Security funds in the market... so long as we have only Democratic presidents.

Despite an unprecedented expansion of areas open to drilling, despite billions of dollars in tax breaks for oil companies, despite lots of fine rhetoric about energy independence, US Crude Oil Production fell 13% during Bush's term. Why? Because drilling your way out of an oil shortage is impossible. It takes decades to bring significant new production on line, and the massive reserves that show up in news stories are often far above the amount of oil that can actually be recovered. United States oil production peaked over three decades ago and despite all the drilling we've done since, we're now cranking out about half of what we produced in 1970. Drill offshore? Go ahead, but US production will decline. Drill the Arctic Refuge? It'll still decline. US oil production at the end of the Obama term will be significantly lower than it is today, no matter how many exploration rigs are mustered. That's not to say that oil companies won't make huge rafts of cash off any new discoveries. They will. It just won't translate into any improvement in the nation's oil dependence.  Speaking of which...

See the story there? It's not just that we replaced our own declining production with more imports. It's worse. Oil imports are up 1.4 million barrels a day. US domestic production is down 800,000 barrels a day. Result? We'e in a much weaker position that when Bush Oil Company took over the nation.

Any Republican who ever again pretends that Democrats are the big spending party, or who claims that Republicans favor a balanced budget, should take forty lashes from the horsewhip of truth. Democrats handed Republicans a balanced budget. Then Republicans -- Republicans in charge of the House, of the Senate, and of the White House -- conspired to utterly wreck the tough negotiations that had made the balanced budget possible in favor of handing over bundles of cash to their high dollar donors and indulging their data-free ideas. Economic theories based on a napkin sketch didn't work under previous Republican regimes, and they didn't work this time.

Bush wasn't just a Republican president, he was the Republican president. Bush was the guy who took everything on the GOP platform seriously. He went to bat for every idea that ever got the official elephant nuts seal of approval. The record that resulted isn't just a measure of Bush's incompetence, it's a measure of just how bad Republican ideas are in practice.

Republican insistence that the market could be self regulating wrecked the market... as it has every time it's been tried.

Republican insistence that rewarding folks who already had loads of cash was the best way to spark the economy failed to make things better for the average American and widened the gap between rich and poor... as it has every time it's been tried.

Republican insistence that giving the oil companies billions would result in a burst of domestic production failed... as it has every time it's been tried.

Republican insistence that the market alone would position us for our energy future left us more vulnerable to those who control overseas oil resources... as it has every time it's been tried.

Of course, there are plenty of other numbers to track. Illegal signing statements. Violations of the Constitution. Americans and non-Americans killed in an unnecessary war.

Still, you have to give the Bush administration at least one "A" on the grade card. The guy was great at recess.

Screw The republicans

John McCain was on Fox News today still spouting the usual conservative shit about the economic stimulus package needs more tax cuts and whatever. I'll deal with his comments later in another post.

Screw Republicans     DailKos

by ThatPoshGirl   Sun Jan 25, 2009

President Obama and Congressional Democrats are still trying to satiate Republicans and win their support for the President's stimulus package.  The stimulus package includes, among other things, funds to improve infrastructure and create jobs, and an increase to pell grant awards.  In the last few days key Republicans including John McCain and Kay Bailey Hutchison have come out against the stimulus package.  McCain told Fox News today that he "disagrees with most provisions in the package," and Hutchison says she is "worried" about the package.  Neither has given any specific reasons why they don't support it.

I say "screw the Republicans."  President Obama has a 68% approval rating, and America can't wait for Republicans to finish licking their wounds and get over themselves.  Who cares what the Republicans think?  It is their policies over the last 8 years that have put us in this position.  Why do we care what they think?

President Obama doesn't need the support of Congressional Republicans to pass the stimulus package.  He has the support of the American People.  He is our President, not the Congresional Republican's president.  It is time to quit worrying about being nice to Republicans and put our mandate to use.  The window of opportunity is too short to screw around with them.

Hannity, Limbaugh, Republicans: Shut The F#%K Up...

we don't want to hear it! The non-stop crying and bitching about the Obama administration spending what may be trillions of dollars to help rebuild our country as well as our economy, is nothing but a farce on your part. Why all of this sudden concern over government spending and deficits, when you had no problem with Bush and his gang spending money on two wars, bailing out Wall Street, and cutting taxes so that his wealthy friends could make more money and the rest of us could eat shit and die?

Does it really upset you that some of this money being spent will be going to rebuild our infrastructure and to help out the backbone of this country, the middle class and lower level ( no insult intended ) workers?  It must bother you that the Republican line of thinking ( such as it is ) is no longer being accepted by the American public. We do not wish to hear your shit any more. We've had enough of your lying. We've had enough of your cronyism. We've had enough of your corruption. I for one, have certainly had enough of your bullshit " family values " because when you look at the past eight years with the GOP pretty much running things, you have no values other than " steal it all."

On that note, here are a few more words of wisdom?

Your way failed.  Big time.  Like "F-" failed.  Of epic proportions.  The tax cuts failed.  The neverending sinkhole of money for Iraq failed.  Torture failed.  Indefinite detention of "enemy combatants" failed – even shot down by a Supreme Court where 7 of the 9 Justices were republican appointees.  Big money handouts to the oil companies failed.  Big money handouts to the financial institutions failed.  Deregulation failed.  Ignoring the infrastructure failed (bridge in Minnesota or Hurricane Katrina, anyone).

And because of it, you lost.  Badly.  Twice in a row.

So guess what?  You don’t get to call the shots.  You don’t get to suddenly decry spending – when it is going to infrastructure, energy policies and the middle class.  You don’t get to perpetuate the approval of torture.  You don’t get to bury evidence, to allow subpoenas to be ignored, or to dictate who gets tax cuts.

You had your chance, and blew it.  Big time.  And because of it, you got smacked down.  Hard.  End of story.

So stop whining.  Stop lying.  Stop with the strawmen and the ad hominem attacks.  That era is tired, and frankly is inching closer and closer to being over.  Obama knows it.  More and more Americans know it.  And more are realizing it every passing day as they see what a responsible, engaged and smart administration can do – and the reaction that they are getting around the country and world.

Wake up and realize it, or continue to make an even bigger mockery of yourselves than you already are.  Which, frankly, is fine by me, since that will marginalize you even further as this country slowly gets back on its feet.

3rd Salmonella Death Reported in Minnesota

The latest casualty of this outbreak was a woman living in a long-term care facility and she was in her 80's. The woman's date of death, name, and the facility in which she was living has not been made public.

The other two victims from the state also live in nursing homes which had served the tainted peanut butter. Of course, the state, says that all three of the victims also had other health problems and officials are not confirming that Salmonella had indeed killed them.                           Source

Thus far there have been seven deaths nationwide linked to the infection.

3 in Minnesota, 2 in Virginia, and 1 each in North Carolina and Idaho.

More than 200 peanut butter and peanut paste products from at least 38 companies have been recalled so far in the ongoing salmonella outbreak, according to the latest count posted on the website of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  Xinhua
