Peanut Corporation of America Knowingly Sold Salmonella Tainted Peanut Butter...

and so the CEO and the rest of the higher ups should all be prosecuted as terrorist because this outbreak is basically an act of terrorism. They should also be charged each with 8 counts of murder for the victims who have died from the Salmonella infection. This company should never see daylight again.

    Oregon Live

Federal officials said today that the company at the heart of the salmonella outbreak sold peanut butter or peanut paste even after tests showed it was tainted with salmonella.

The Food and Drug Administration found 12 instances in 2007 and 2008 when the Peanut Corporation of America actually identified salmonella in its own product but then put that on the market, sometimes after it was retested by a different lab that found no bacteria, said Michael Rogers, director of field investigations at the FDA.

Scientists have found four different strains of salmonella since starting this investigation: two at the company's Blakely, Ga., plant and two in King Nut peanut butter.

Only one strain, salmonella typhimurium, which was found in Austin Toasty Crackers, has made people sick with peanut butter in Oregon.

The feds say that even more food items will be recalled due to this mess and also pointed out that contaminated items will not necessarily have the Peanut Corporation's name on the label.

As of today, Tuesday Jan 27, almost 200 products have been recalled. this kind of sucks a bit because many of the products are some of my favorites, and I'm starting to lose a little weight from lack of munchies. What's one to do?

    Salmonella Found In Peanut Butter

Just seems to be getting worse for ConAgra and their Peter Pan brand of peanut butter, my favorite. Of course, the lawsuits have started with 5 having been filed thus far.

AP                By ANNA JO BRATTON, Associated Press Writer

OMAHA, Neb. — A week after ConAgra Foods Inc. recalled peanut butter from its Georgia plant after a salmonella outbreak, the Center for Disease Control confirmed the presence of the dangerous germ.

No deaths have been confirmed, although a Pennsylvania family filed a lawsuit Wednesday claiming a relative died from eating tainted peanut butter.

Opened jars from people who were sickened in New York, Oklahoma and Iowa tested positive for salmonella, said Dave Daigle, a spokesman for the CDC in Atlanta.

Leslea Bennett-Webb, spokeswoman for the Oklahoma Department of Health, said the state recovered seven peanut butter jars from 11 cases confirmed by the state, and found the strain of salmonella in at least one.

In Iowa, Kevin Teale, spokesman for the state's Department of Health, said the positive match is from one of the state's six confirmed cases.

The family of Roberta Barkay alleges in a negligence and wrongful-death lawsuit against ConAgra that salmonella-tainted peanut butter killed Barkay and sickened her husband and daughter.

Barkay, 76, had been hospitalized with gastrointestinal problems, then developed a bacterial infection before she died Jan. 30, said her lawyer, Rob Peirce.

Her husband, William, was sick with similar symptoms late last year, after the Barkays bought the peanut butter, according to the lawyer and the lawsuit. Their daughter also got sick after eating the peanut butter while at her parents' home for her mother's funeral, Peirce said.

Roberta Barkay was not tested for salmonella, but Peirce said the peanut butter the family ate was part of the batch ConAgra recalled last week. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages.

Across the country, at least four other lawsuits claim negligence by the company led to the salmonella illnesses.

    Salmonella Outbreak: January 26,2009

                       CDC

As of 9PM EDT, Sunday, January 25, 2009, 501 persons infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium have been reported from 43 states.

Infection may have contributed to eight deaths.

Although we cannot yet say the outbreak is over, the numbers of new cases have declined over the last two weeks.  The outbreak appears to have reached its peak in December and is now in decline.

Salmonella Typhimurium was isolated in Canada from Austin brand peanut butter crackers purchased in the United States. Officials in Canada have identified the Salmonella found in these peanut butter crackers as the outbreak strain.

Salmonella Typhimurium was isolated from Austin brand peanut butter crackers in Canada. Further tests are pending to determine if the Salmonella Typhimurium in these crackers are the outbreak strain.

More than 180 peanut butter-containing products produced by a variety of companies may have been made with the ingredients recalled by PCA.  The list of currently recalled products can be found on the FDA website*.

    Fri Feb 16,2007

All Peter Pan peanut butter bought since May 2006 should be discarded, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on Friday in a statement broadening its warning about salmonella-contaminated peanut butter.

The FDA said the suspect Great Value peanut butter also could be identified by the 2111 code.

The CDC has identified the strain of bacteria as Salmonella Tennessee, one of many strains of salmonella bacteria.

They can cause nausea, diarrhea and other ill effects, but usually the sickness clears up on its own in less than a week.

"Although Great Value peanut butter with the specified product code has not been linked by CDC to the cases of Salmonella Tennessee infection, the product is manufactured in the same plant as Peter Pan peanut butter and, thus, is believed to be at similar risk of contamination," the FDA said in a statement.

"Great Value peanut butter made by manufacturers other than ConAgra is not affected."

The FDA said it persuaded ConAgra to recall the peanut butter on Wednesday, shortly after the CDC confirmed it was investigating the outbreak.

    Salmonella Outbreak: Update January 23,2009

The latest report on this outbreak, as of 9 PM, January 22 from the CDC.

As of 9PM EDT, Wednesday, January 22, 2009, 491 persons infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium have been reported from 43 states.

Among persons with available information, 22% reported being hospitalized. Infection may have contributed to seven deaths.

To clarify whether other peanut-butter containing foods are associated with the outbreak, CDC along with state partners conducted a second national case-control study. Between January 17 and 19 2009, telephone interviews were conducted with 75 persons who became ill with the outbreak strain and 399 well persons. Preliminary analysis of data received as of 9PM, Sunday, January 18, reveals an association between illness and consumption of pre-packaged peanut butter crackers, specifically with Austin and Keebler brands.

Austin and Keebler brand peanut butter crackers are produced by the Kellogg Company in North Carolina, using peanut paste from the Peanut Corporation of America.  On January 14, 2009, the Kellogg Company put a precautionary hold on these peanut butter crackers, and on January 16 recalled these products. Other peanut butter containing products produced by a variety of companies may have been made with the ingredients recalled by PCA. CDC and state health departments continue to investigate the association of other brands and foods that contain peanut butter with illness.

FDA and the product manufacturers are working to determine the list of affected products, which may be extensive. Many companies have already announced whether their products include ingredients being recalled by Peanut Corporation of America, Georgia, and more companies are expected to make similar announcements. The current list of recall announcements from companies can be found at FDA website*.

      From the  FDA.

January 23, 2009A combination of epidemiological analysis and laboratory testing by state officials in Minnesota and Connecticut, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have enabled FDA to confirm that the sources of the outbreak of illnesses caused by Salmonella Typhimurium are peanut butter and peanut paste produced by the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) at its Blakely, Georgia processing plant.

Peanut butter is sold by PCA in bulk containers ranging in size from five (5) to 1,700 pounds.  The peanut paste is sold in sizes ranging from 35-pound containers to product sold by the tanker container.  Neither of these products is sold directly to consumers.

However, through its investigation, FDA has determined that PCA distributed potentially contaminated product to more than 70 consignee firms, for use as an ingredient in hundreds of different products, such as cookies, crackers, cereal, candy and ice cream.  Companies all over the country that received product from PCA have issued voluntary recalls of their products.  FDA has created a searchable database for these products, which can be found at http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/peanutbutterrecall/index.cfm, Identification of products subject to recall is continuing and this list is updated frequently.

Salmonella Tainted Peanut Butter Cause Of 3 Deaths?

A few days ago, I reported on the Salmonella outbreak going on in 42 states.

Now, I have an update on this.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC ) said Monday that peanut butter is the likely culprit behind the salmonella outbreak. The infection has now struck 410 people in 43 states and may have caused 3 deaths.

      From the CDC:

Preliminary analysis of an epidemiologic study conducted by CDC and public health officials in multiple states comparing foods eaten by ill and well persons has suggested peanut butter as a likely source. To date, no association has been found with common brand names of peanut butter sold in grocery stores.

An epidemiologic investigation by the Minnesota Department of Health suggested King Nut creamy peanut butter as a likely source of Salmonella infections among many ill persons in Minnesota. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture Laboratory isolated the outbreak strains of Salmonella Typhimurium from an open 5-pound container of King Nut brand creamy peanut butter. The product is distributed in Minnesota to establishments such as long-term care facilities, hospitals, schools, universities, restaurants, delis, cafeterias, and bakeries. It is not sold directly to consumers and is not known to be distributed for retail sale in grocery stores.

On January 10, 2009, King Nut Companies, a distributor of peanut butter manufactured by Peanut Corporation of America, issued a voluntary recall of peanut butter distributed under the King Nut label. In addition, King Nut Companies also issued a voluntary recall of Parnell’s Pride peanut butter distributed by King Nut, which is produced by the same manufacturer. The recalled products have lot codes beginning with “8”. No other King Nut products are included in this voluntary recall.

Go to the CDC website for a look at which states are having the outbreak and how many in those states have been infected.

    Salmonella Outbreak:475 Persons Infected...

        as of Sunday,January 18,2009.

       CDC

As of 9PM EDT, Sunday, January 18, 2009, 475 persons infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium have been reported from 43 states and Canada.

Preliminary analysis of data received as of 9PM, Sunday, January 18, reveals an association with consumption of any pre-packaged peanut butter crackers, and specifically with Austin and Keebler peanut butter crackers. Austin and Keebler peanut butter crackers are produced by Kellogg Company. On January 14, 2009, Kellogg Company put a precautionary hold on these peanut butter crackers, and on January 16 recalled these products. Other peanut butter containing products produced by a variety of companies may have been made with the ingredients recalled by PCA. CDC and state health departments continue to investigate the association of other brands and foods that contain peanut butter with illness.

The Connecticut Department of Public Health Laboratory and the Georgia Department of Agriculture independently isolated Salmonella from unopened 5-pound containers of King Nut brand peanut butter. Further tests are pending to determine if this Salmonella is the outbreak strain.

Clusters of infections in several states have been reported in schools and other institutions, such as long-term care facilities and hospitals. King Nut is the only brand of peanut butter used in those facilities for which we have information.

The list of peanut butter and peanut paste containing products that may be affected is still being determined and is incomplete at this time. However, the list of currently recalled products can be found on the FDA website*.

Investigators Say That Egg Farm Knew Of Salmonella…

…which is not a surprise, is it? With the lax government over-site of our food industry in the past few decades, would you worry about a little food poisoning if it were going to maybe cost you a lot of money to fix the problem? Wouldn’t you also try to avoid what could be massive fines and lawsuits ?

Congressional investigators say the Iowa egg farm at the center of a massive salmonella outbreak received hundreds of positive results for salmonella in the two years before its eggs sickened more than 1,500 people.

In a letter Tuesday to the company's owner, the House Energy and Commerce Committee says that investigators have obtained records showing that Wright County Egg received 426 positive results for salmonella between 2008 and 2010.

Next week, the owner of the company is due to testify before the same committee.

    42 State Salmonella Outbreak

Not sure of you are aware of this, I wasn't, but 400 people in 42 states have been struck by an outbreak of Salmonella. AND, once again, the culprit would appear to be peanut butter. That is what state officials  in Minnesota are saying at this time.

On Friday, the Minnesota Department of Health said preliminary laboratory testing found salmonella bacteria in a 5-pound container of King Nut brand creamy peanut butter. The tests have not linked it to the type of salmonella in the national outbreak, but additional results are expected early next week.

Those state officials are not yet identifying the company that makes the peanut butter, but it apparently is not sold to the general public. So. who gets the food item?

...but is distributed in Minnesota to long-term care facilities, hospitals, schools, universities, restaurants, delis, cafeterias and bakeries.

The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday that 399 cases have been confirmed nationally, with about one in five of victims hospitalized. They have not confirmed any deaths associated with the outbreak

You can get much more information on this outbreak by going to the CDC.

Peanut Butter Recalled Because Of Possible Salmonella Outbreak

You know what the worst news was today?

Peanut butter getting pulled from the shelves in some states because of a suspected salmonella outbreak in some 39 states! WTF!

Of all brands it would have to be my favorite one, Peter Pan. Salmonella from peanut butter has got to be a first.

I'll blame this on Bush also when I can find a way to make it sound good.

    Charlotte Observer

Four out of 15 possible cases in North Carolina are in the Charlotte region, one each in Mecklenburg, Union, Iredell and Catawba counties, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control. The cases are scattered across the state, and no one has died, the agency said. The age range of patients ranged from 1 to 76 years old.

Matthews-based Harris Teeter pulled all Peter Pan peanut butter products from its shelves until further notice because of a federal investigation of possible salmonella contamination, spokeswoman Jennifer Panetta said. The warning covers Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter jars with the product code on the lid beginning with the numbers "2111."

Great Value is the house brand for Wal-Mart.

    CDC Salmonella Outbreak: The Latest

I'm a little late with this because I got busy doing other things over the past 2 days.  But, surprisingly, not everyone has heard about this outbreak, so here's the latest from the CDC.

As of 9pm EDT, Thursday, January 15, 2009, 453 persons infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium have been reported from 43 states.

The investigation is ongoing, and exposures to peanut butter and other peanut butter-containing products are being examined. Preliminary analysis of an epidemiologic study conducted by CDC and public health officials in multiple states comparing foods eaten by ill and well persons has suggested peanut butter as a likely source of the bacteria causing the infections.

Clusters of infections in several states have been reported in schools and other institutions, such as long-term care facilities and hospitals. King Nut is the only brand of peanut butter used in those facilities for which we have information.

On January 10, 2009, King Nut Companies, a distributor of peanut butter manufactured by Peanut Corporation of America (PCA), issued a voluntary recall of peanut butter distributed under the King Nut label. In addition, King Nut Companies issued a voluntary recall of Parnell’s Pride peanut butter, which they also distributed and which is produced by the same manufacturer. The recalled products have lot codes beginning with “8”. No other King Nut products are included in this voluntary recall. More information about this recall can be found on the FDA website.

On January 13, 2009, Peanut Corporation of America (PCA), the manufacturer of King Nut peanut butter, announced a voluntary recall of peanut butter produced in its Blakely, Georgia processing facility produced on or after July 1, 2008, that had specific lot numbers and descriptions. More information regarding the recall is available on the FDA website.  The peanut butter being recalled is sold in bulk and distributed to institutions, food service industries, and private label food companies, under the brand names Parnell’s Pride and King Nut. None of the peanut butter being recalled is sold directly to consumers through retail grocery stores.

On January 14, 2009, Kellogg Company announced it has taken the precautionary measure of putting a hold on a variety of Austin® and Keebler® branded toasted peanut butter sandwich crackers. Peanut Corporation of America, the manufacturer currently under investigation by FDA and other regulatory agencies, is a peanut paste supplier that the Kellogg Company uses in its Austin® and Keebler® branded peanut butter sandwich crackers.  More information can be found on the FDA website.

Just from the business side of the equation, this could get very ugly.

3rd Salmonella Death Reported in Minnesota

The latest casualty of this outbreak was a woman living in a long-term care facility and she was in her 80's. The woman's date of death, name, and the facility in which she was living has not been made public.

The other two victims from the state also live in nursing homes which had served the tainted peanut butter. Of course, the state, says that all three of the victims also had other health problems and officials are not confirming that Salmonella had indeed killed them.                           Source

Thus far there have been seven deaths nationwide linked to the infection.

3 in Minnesota, 2 in Virginia, and 1 each in North Carolina and Idaho.

More than 200 peanut butter and peanut paste products from at least 38 companies have been recalled so far in the ongoing salmonella outbreak, according to the latest count posted on the website of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  Xinhua

    Latest On Salmonella

Been a while since I have been able to update this info, sorry.

    CDC

As of 9PM EDT, Wednesday, January 22, 2009, 491 persons infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium have been reported from 43 states

Among the persons with confirmed, reported dates available, illnesses began between September 14, 2008 and January 8, 2009. Patients range in age from <1 to 98 years; 48% are female. Among persons with available information, 22% reported being hospitalized. Infection may have contributed to seven deaths.

The investigation is ongoing, and exposures to peanut butter and other peanut butter-containing products are being examined.

To date, 15 clusters of infections in five states have been reported in schools and other institutions, such as long-term care facilities and hospitals. Among 14 clusters for which we have detailed information, King Nut is the only brand of peanut butter used in those facilities.

So this is long from over folks, even though the infections have been slowing down.

Salmonella Found At Georgia Peanut Plant

U.S. Food and Drug Administration has found Salmonella  contamination at a peanut plant in Georgia, as was expected.

                   News Daily

"We expect the lots of recalled products to continue to expand," Dr. Robert Tauxe of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told reporters in a conference call.

The Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) facility in Blakely, Georgia isn't producing any more products and hasn't been for some time now. the company has recalled all peanut butter and peanut paste produced at the plant since July 1, 2008.

Somebody is in some pretty deep shit over this, to be sure.

    Salmonella Outbreak: Latest Recall Updates

but first, thanks to  Jill Richardson for doing a lot of the legwork on this Salmonella outbreak. She is from whom I get much of the list updates.

                                      La Vida Locavore

Meanwhile, Kellogg Co. issued a voluntary recall of two varieties of ShopRite brand peanut butter sandwich crackers because they contain peanut paste produced by PCA and had the potential to be contaminated. The two recalled sandwich crackers are: ShopRite Peanut Butter on Toasty Crackers, all sizes; and ShopRite Peanut Butter and Cheese Cracker Snacks, all sizes.

The two products are manufactured by Kellogg for ShopRite, which has stores in Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

Whole Foods Market announced a similar recall of its Whole Foods Carob Energee Nuggets distributed to stores in California, Oregon, Washington, and Nevada

Jewel-Osco, a division of Supervalu Inc. and leading Chicago supermarket and drugstore chain, recalled its Happy Tails multi-flavored dog biscuits. Like humans, salmonella in pets can cause diarrhea, vomiting, fever and abdominal pain. It can also be transferred to other animals or humans.

Note: This is NOT A COMPLETE LIST of all recalled foods. This is only the newest foods recalled.

(If you notice - there are a number of brands with identically named products being recalled. A company called Nash Finch makes desserts that are sold under several brand names - even though they are the same exact foods! See the FDA Site for the complete list. As is usual in America, at least 1 lawsuit has been filed in this case. I'm sure that many more will follow. Maybe this is where the next round of government bailouts for business will be heading.

E .coli Found In Ground Beef

First it was ConAgra with their Peter Pan peanut butter getting tainted with Salmonella and now we have Tyson Fresh Meats  doing a recall of some 7.6 tons on ground beef which could be contaminated with E.coli.

The beef was processed on February 16, 2007 and shipped to four states, those being Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Utah.  Source

Thus far it seems that no one has gotten sick from the beef which is a good thing but the outbreaks that the United States has had in the past few years is getting kind of nutty. Do we not have enough inspectors at the USDA to cover the areas that they need to take care of? The last that I heard, this sort of thing is supposed to be caught before the food that we eat is shipped from these processing plants.

Mars Pet Food Launches A Recall

    DKos

Mars Pet Food is recalling 14 brands of dry dog and cat food made between February and July of this year, after two people who may have had contact with some of the food became infected with Salmonella. If you feed your dog or cat any of the brands listed below, here's how to check the package code.

    Recalled brands:

    * Pedigree * Ol' Roy * Retriever * Paws & Claws * Member's Mark * Natural Dog Food * Natural Cat Food * Doggy Bag * PMI Nutrition * Red Flannel * PetPride * Special Kitty * Country Acres * Wegman's Bruiser * Wegman's Buju & Ziggie

To check whether the package you have is part of the recall, look at the code under the "Best Before" date.

    For Pedigree brand food:

Consumers should look for "PAE" on the bottom line – the sixth, seventh and eighth digits. Sample:
    Best Before 02/2009
    808G1PAE01 12:00

    For all other brands:

Consumers should look for "17" as the first two digits of the second line. Sample:
    Best By Feb 18 09
    17 1445 1

If you find a match, wrap up the product according to FDA guidelines and take it back to the store where you purchased it for a refund.
